I’ve been a technology journalist since the early nineties. My passion is photography and the ever-changing hardware and software that we use to create it, be it traditional cameras and Photoshop or smartphones and tablets with their numerous apps.

A powerful new feature is coming to Google Photos that could provide a safer, more private alternative to social media updates. First, the unreleased feature, called “My Week,” is a group photo journal that helps close friends and family keep in touch by sharing regular photos and videos on a weekly basis. My Week is now available for anyone to try, provided they have an invitation.

After accepting the invitation, two new tiles will appear in the Memories carousel. One is for the My Week album you have just joined, and the other will be titled “Introducing My Week.” Tapping the latter will start the setup process to set up your first My Week album for the new user.Once My Week is enabled, you can add to your album whenever you wish by tapping a new “Add to your week” tile at the front of your Memories carousel.

My Week albums are currently limited to a maximum of 50 participants, which effectively prevents them from being used to build a wider following, but may also prove restrictive to those who wish to share with very large families or friendship groups.Touted as a “weekly photo journal for you and a few special people you choose,” My Week is promoted as a friendlier, more private way to share personal updates without the pressure to follow viral trends or grow an online following.

While My Week is hardly a new concept, most social media platforms, including Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, now offer some form of “stories” feature. However, My Week will allow users to share updates away from some of the potentially toxic elements of these algorithmically driven platforms.
