The 134 bed, seven-storey development will be built on the site of a demolished church at 10 Kelbourne Street despite locals opposing the plans, arguing the new build will leave a nearby children's park with no sunlight.
Proposals to build new Glasgow student flats on a razed site in North Kelvinside have been given the green light by planners.
Members of North Kelvin Community Council opposed the plans, arguing they will leave a nearby children's park in shadow, with the new building blocking it from sunlight. The planning papers for the development include a sunlight assessment which shows parts of the play park would not receive a minimum of two hours’ sunlight even on the spring equinox, adding the area “would be significantly negatively impacted by the proposal. Other areas would also have a reduction in sunlight which would impact on the enjoyment of these spaces.”
“The proposal for purpose-built student accommodation in this location is therefore considered to make a positive contribution to the local environment and shall support regeneration objectives. It is not considered to raise harmful impacts upon the existing community.
