This advanced imaging tool offers rapid 3D visualizations, revealing the functionality of organs, bones, and internal systems, as well as any potential abnormalities. Compared to the previous camera, the scan time for some patients will be significantly reduced, from 27 minutes to a mere 12 minutes.
Radiology manager Sam Newton emphasized that the £1.75 million scanner provides invaluable insights into potential issues within organs or systems. 'It is just another imaging tool that we can use to find out what's going wrong with a patient,' she stated. 'This helps a particular organ or system to show up and any areas of concern to be highlighted.' The scanner operates through nuclear medicine, employing radioactive isotopes to generate the scans. Lee Evans, the radiology risk manager, highlighted the benefits of the new scanner for patients, noting its combination of CT scanner technology with gamma technology. 'You can use a CT scanner and show that someone has kidneys, but it doesn't necessarily tell you all that much about how much they're working or how well they are working in the same way a gamma camera does,' he explained. 'By adding the two together, you can see the actual structure that you are looking at; you can locate it and you can see what it's doing.' Patients undergoing the scan are administered radioactive material, enabling the creation of more detailed and informative images.The integration of CT and gamma technology represents a significant advancement in medical imaging, allowing healthcare professionals to obtain a comprehensive understanding of a patient's condition.
