The non-profit organisation that owns news site New Frame has asked staff to stop badmouthing it on social media with 'malicious statements' and 'conspiracy theories'. | JanTamb Fin24
As journalists at progressive news site New Frame seek answers on why the site abruptly shut down, the non-profit organisation that owns the publication has lashed out at"extraordinarily malicious statements" and"conspiracy theories" about it on social media.
On Friday last week, 26 New Frame journalists received letters to say that the Centre for Pan African Media , which manages New Frame, has not been able to secure funding beyond the end of September. It announced an immediate stop to the group's operations to"preserve capital resources" as a section 189 process began with staff to see if any jobs were salvageable.
CPAM appears to have been taken aback by the anger that erupted on social media over the past week. On Thursday, its board blasted what it said were"conspiracy theories" with"no basis in reality," and"demonstrably untrue and extraordinarily malicious statements" being made online. The board did not, however, say who had been defaming it or how the social media posts were malicious. Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
