The new three-year contract takes effect Oct. 1, and comes with a 7% increase to firefighters and paramedics’ base wage in the first year.
Six months was all it took for the city and the firefighters’ union to settle on a new contract — a timeline that City Manager Erik Walsh said “set a new standard” for relations between the city and the association. The City Council ’s approval Thursday of the contract, which will cost the city nearly $110 million over the next three years, was the last step in the bargaining process. Though the vote was largely a formality, it was a celebratory moment for city officials and union leadership.
“The accomplishment of one collective bargaining agreement doesn’t necessarily provide we’ve reestablished that we all get along now and we’re all great, we’re all friends.” One question heading into Thursday’s council vote was whether District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito would take part in it, after saying in May that she hadn’t decided whether she would recuse herself. Her brother, Joe Alderete III, was part of the union’s negotiations committee, which advised its negotiations teams.
