A new expungement law has taken affect in Utah after being signed by the state legislature earlier in 2024.
“I’m really happy to see lawmakers prioritize this issue because it doesn't just affect people, it affects us all. If we don't create lawful pathways for people to move forward with their lives we all suffer” said Noella Sudbury , the founder of Rasa Legal , a non-profit that helps people through the expungement process.Before this law, if a person had multiple cases, they had to file fee paperwork in every court you had a case.
The process required a lot of paperwork. Now, the law allows for people to fill out one fee waiver impact with a judge.“This is going to be a lot easier for a person to file just one packet and save a lot of court time that was being used to decide the same thing five different times” Sudbury said. There’s also a pathway on the court’s website for people to find out if they’re available for automatic expungement.Sudbury has been advocating on this issue for years.___
