With the Express-News Taste Team as her guide, our new features editor Jan Waddy set off to explore five iconic restaurants in a crash course on the San Antonio food scene.

I had to cut the list off for this write-up at some point or we’d never meet.

The Award-Winning Tortilla Soup at Jim's on Blanco and Loop 1604 is loaded with chicken, tomatoes, onions and fresh cilantro in a broth topped with corn tortilla strips and shredded cheese.wasn’t a place I would have stopped if it hadn’t been recommended with an endorsement for the"award-winning" chicken tortilla soup, though Jim looks friendly enough on the sign.

While the door said the diner usually is open 24 hours, those hours temporarily were cut back for lack of help, yet everyone was friendly and the lunch service was fast. The Half Pollo at Pollos Asados Los Nortenos on Walzem Road is served with grilled onion, jalapeno, lime, rice, charro beans, corn tortillas, green and red sauce.

For all the families in the restaurant, it was relatively quiet with exception of Tejano music. My eyes were drawn to canvases of Frida Kahlo, sugar skulls and vaqueros. But once the food arrived, my focus changed and I understood why the volume level was so low.
