New endometriosis treatment could 'give women hope' say scientists as clinical trial launched
A new clinical trial has been launched by scientists who are researching a potential new treatment for endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition that affects 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth in the UK. Symptoms of the condition can often be debilitating, and as a result have a significant impact on a person's life and mental health.
The drug has the potential to be the first new treatment for the condition in 40 years, and could be the first ever non-hormonal and non-surgical treatment for endometriosis. Half of those enrolled in the trial will be given dichloroacetate, a drug previously used to treat rare metabolic disorders in children, while the other half will be given a dummy drug.
Researchers have previously found that when endometriosis cells were treated with dichloroacetate, lactate production decreased to normal levels and the size of the endometriosis lesions were reduced. Janet Lindsay, chief executive of health charity Wellbeing of Women, added: “It is completely unacceptable that there have been no new treatments for endometriosis in 40 years.
