Plaza de Valero, a new public gathering space in downtown San Antonio, honors the Alamo's original mission name and offers a pedestrian-friendly area for relaxation and community events.

Plaza de Valero — a gathering area with a piece of San Antonio history located south of Alamo Plaza — recently opened to the public. The plaza honors the Alamo ’s original mission name, San Antonio de Valero, and serves as a pedestrian-friendly place to wind down, according to The Alamo . Visitors will notice tables, chairs, grassy areas and a pavilion where Alamo officials stated they’d host entertainment programming for the community.

“It’s like nice because we’re here just to walk around for Christmas, and finally, it’s like so comfortable to be with the family, come off of the Riverwalk, and enjoy the shops. Yeah, it’s beautiful for San Antonio to grow like this,” said a woman at the plaza on Tuesday.During construction, crews installed a 167,000-gallon water cistern underneath the plaza, irrigating newly planted trees and native plants on the grounds. “Excited because you can finally fit a lot of people in here without it feeling crowded,” said a visitor at Plaza de Valero. The plaza is the latest addition amid renovations at Alamo Plaza, which is Texas’ most visited tourist destination, according to the Alamo. Plaza de Valero is open Sunday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m
