“I can tell you as a mother and grandmother, my heart goes out to this family. No family should have to experience this,’ Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price said.

Alameda County’s district attorney defended her handling of a deadly, gang-related freeway shooting that claimed the life of a 5-year-old Santa Clara girl earlier this month, after her administration initially declined to file paperwork that could have prolonged the prison sentence of anyone found guilty in the April 8 killing.

A gang sentencing enhancement to the murder charge was included for each suspect when they were booked by the California Highway Patrol — a process that essentially acts as law enforcement’s initial recommendation for any charges to be later filed by prosecutors.

“I can tell you as a mother and grandmother, my heart goes out to this family,” Price added. “No family should have to experience this. No mother, no grandmother should have to be riding in a car and discover that your child has been shot by someone that you have no idea and no sense, no warning whatsoever, that this would happen.”

Eliyanah Crisostomo’s family was on their way to a birthday celebration when she was killed by one of several bullets to hit the car she and her family were riding in, according to Ezery Beauchamp, chief of the California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate Division.
