French authorities have shared new information about the man behind an 'absolutely despicable' mass stabbing at a playground which left four children and two adults 'between life and death'.
The 31-year-old was filmed wielding a knife and running around amid the attack at a park in the lakeside town of Annecy, near the Swiss border, at about 9.45am on Thursday.
The children were aged from 22 months to three years old. Two have been identified, one as a British toddler and another as Dutch boy. French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne confirmed at a press conference the man was a Syrian national who had lived under asylum in Sweden for the past 10 years. Annecy prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis also appeared at the press conference, telling reporters there did not seem to be “any kind of terrorist motivation”.French President Emmanuel Macron said the attack was of “absolute cowardice” and the critically injured were “between life and death”.
