Details of the 30-year approach to water security come amid warnings of a dry summer and the need for new water sources to supply a growing population.
The Queensland government will build a desalination plant in south-east Queensland by 2035 as part of a new 30-year water security plan. The plan will see an “immediate” ramping-up of operations at the Gold Coast desalination plant to turn seawater into freshwater, with plans to expand it by 2033.
The Wyaralong Dam in the Scenic Rim will also be connected to the water grid with a new water treatment plant built by 2033.Amid warnings of a dry summer, combined dam levels in the south-east have fallen below 69 per cent and a draft government strategy has acknowledged that “societies are confronting the realities of more intense weather extremes and climate impacts”.
“This plan firmly focuses on desalination because it goes directly into the water grid and is not lost to evaporation during droughts,” Palaszczuk told parliament. “Desalination leaves a greater flood buffer in Wivenhoe Dam at the end of a drought, and desalination secures the water grid during flood events when water treatment plants are being impacted by debris.”is a state political reporter with Brisbane Times, where he has also covered city council and general news.
