The dementia risk was greater for women and Black Americans, the study found.
The team -- including researchers from Johns Hopkins University, Mayo Clinic and New York University -- projected new U.S. dementia cases would double from more than 500,000 in 2020 to approximately 1 million by 2060. The authors said this increase is directly tied to the aging of the U.S. population.The study also showed that the risk of developing dementia after age 55 is 42%, more than double the risk seen by older studies.
Researchers also found that white Americans are expected to see nearly double the number of dementia cases, while cases among Black Americans could triple.
