Prisoner rights advocates have at times struggled to prove the conditions behind bars. That’s because the state only required TDCJ to record temperatures inside inmate dormitories and cell blocks at all of its prisons beginning in September 2021.show 72% of state-run jails and prisons logged at least one day where temperatures were in excess of 95 degrees last summer. The 15 units where the heat indoors topped 100 spanned the state, from Fannin to Frio counties.
Canales and Sherman’s bills were unanimously approved on Wednesday. They next head to the calendars committee to be scheduled for debate on the House floor. “They have the money,” she said. “What they don’t have is the political will or the compassion to get it done.”
