Previously, these employees received a 2% salary increase after each of their first four years with the city, in addition to any general raises negotiated between the union and the administration. In contrast, workers represented by other unions have long enjoyed pay scales with more than four steps. Prior to the strike, Parker proposed implementing a fifth step for DC 33, aiming to create parity with other city workers and provide veteran employees with a raise. This new step means DC 33 members will now receive an additional 2% increase in their fifth year of service. While more intricate than the across-the-board raises that fueled public disagreement between Parker and Boulware, this extra step will have a substantial impact on DC 33 members, particularly when calculating their pension benefits at the end of their careers.
