Starting this week, drivers entering Manhattan below 60th Street during peak hours will face a $9 fee. The new congestion pricing plan aims to reduce traffic and pollution, while improving mass transit. While supporters believe it will alleviate congestion, critics argue it will burden travelers and not effectively solve the city's traffic issues. Exemptions include low-income drivers, emergency vehicles, and public buses. Ride-sharing services will pass on the cost to passengers.
"I don't know how it's going to work out moving forward in the future. But I’ll probably have to pay,” said Darnel Powell, of Westbury."So, I try to make other arrangements if it's the subway or... usually it's the subway,” Powell said.
Passenger cars will be charged $9 during peak hours from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. Motorcycles will pay $4.50. Trucks and buses will pay between $14.40 to $21.60.
