A new Chief Justice has been announced for the Alaska Supreme Court.
Justice Susan Carney will take over the role of Chief Justice from current Chief Justice Peter Maassen, who will be retiring from the Supreme Court in January.
She became an assistant public defender in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Interior villages. In 1998, she moved to the Office of Public Advocacy and supervised the Fairbanks office as well as handling all of the North Slope cases. Carney will be the second female judge to become Alaska’s Chief Justice. The first was Dana Fabe in 2000, who was Chief Justice for three terms.
