Expect delayed practices, games as schools comply with new temperature thresholds
“I would ask our state lawmakers to come to Ramona for a regular 3:45 p.m. practice, then drive over to the coast … Carlsbad, Oceanside, Torrey Pines … and tell me we’re dealing with the same weather,” Baldwin said.CA State Law AB 1653 was passed in October. In July, the CIF passed Bylaw 503 K to address “Heat Illness and Air Quality Index Protocols.”
The heat is bound to cause delays early in the 2024 fall sports season. Varsity football games begin on Thursday night. “I understand the intent of the law,” said Baldwin, who is in his 20th season as head coach of the Bulldogs. “We all have the best interest of our students at heart. We have hydration crews at Ramona because we understand you have to hydrate in the heat. We get it. We take breaks.”
“Sure kids can go home, but what about the young kids, kids who don’t drive? They’re stuck on campus. If we don’t do something, grades will suffer because homework isn’t getting done. And what about the coaches? The majority of coaches at all schools are off campus, work other jobs. Are they available from 6-9 p.m. or 6-9 a.m..?”
