New Braunfels school officials have zeroed in on their pick to be the district's next superintendent.

The district's board of trustees named Laurelyn Arterbury, an administrator at the Leander Independent School District, as the lone lone finalist to replace recently departed superintendent Cade Smith. The school board must wait 21 days before voting on final approval of a contract with Arterbury, according to Texas law.serves about 9,700 students on 15 campuses and employees about 1,200 workers, according to the district's website. The district recently announced plans to build a second high school to serve the growing city.Arterbury is currently chief of staff for Leander ISD, a school district of about 42,000 students in the Austin metro area.

Arterbury has a doctorate from Texas A&M University, a master's degree from Texas State University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas. The New Braunfels ISD superintendent's position came open in March, when former superintendent Smith abruptly announced his resignation after two years in the role. District officials have not provided more information about his departure. District administrator James Largent has been serving as interim superintendent.
