The City of New Braunfels provides residents with a way to recycle their Christmas trees into mulch instead of sending them to the landfill.
The City of New Braunfels is offering residents an environmentally-friendly alternative to sending Christmas trees to the landfill this holiday season. Starting today, the city’s Recycling Center will accept discarded Christmas trees to be repurposed into mulch. Matthew Wickman, Assistant Director of Public Works, said the program has been in place for several years, following a grant that enabled the purchase of a mulching machine.
'It was just a way to save the trees from ending up on the curb and in the landfill,' he explained. Wickman added that while tree drop-offs have been slow so far, the program is expected to pick up steam after the holidays. From Friday, Dec. 27 through Jan. 13, New Braunfels residents can drop off their trees at the Recycling Center, located near downtown on South Castel Avenue. The city offers this service free of charge, but participants are asked to bring their own shovels and buckets to collect the mulch, as there will be no staff assistance available for loading. 'Starting on Friday the 27th through January 13, customers will be able to bring in their Christmas trees to our Recycling Center,' Wickman said. 'Once we mulch the trees, they’ll be available for anyone to take home.' For those unable to make it to the center, residents can place their trees on the curb during regular recycling collection days. Wickman reminded that the trees must be free of decorations, lights, and any flocking or paint. The program will conclude on Jan. 13, 2024. In addition to the city’s center, Comal County is also collecting trees at its own recycling facility on Resource Drive. The county’s collection will run until Jan. 15
