New Braunfels cruised past Churchill in its Class 6A baseball bi-district playoff series last week, and Luke Holt was front and center both at the plate and on the mound. The senior pitched a five-inning shutout in a 10-0 win Friday and went 7 for 8 with three doubles, six runs batted in and two stolen bases over the two games. His performance both pitching and hitting earned him Express-News baseball player of the week honors Monday.
The series went to a deciding third game, which was played Saturday afternoon. Worthy was named softball player of the week after putting on a workhorse pitching performance in a three-game area playoff series against Dripping Springs, helping Clemens advance to the 6A regional quarterfinals. Worthy pitched complete games in all three games, facing 104 batters in a 24-hour span, to help the Buffaloes rally from one game down to claim the series.
