Parents from Rilke Schule spoke at Tuesday’s meeting, asking the board to reconsider their March 4 decision.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anticipating the closure of two elementary schools, the boundaries of three elementary schools were changed to redistribute students from Lake Hood and Nunaka Elementary Schools, which will close at the end of the school year.

Along with the new boundaries was further discussion on what to do with the two school buildings once they are empty. At the board’s previous meeting on March 4, they voted to give the buildings over to two charter schools. Nunaka Valley would be used by Anchorage STrEaM Academy, and Lake Hood by Alaska Native Cultural Charter School . Some disagree with that decision.

Ultimately there was a motion to reverse the previous decision, but it failed. However, the School Board did approve a memorandum allowing the school district to relocate Rilke Schule to the building previously occupied by Abbott Loop Elementary School, which will become vacant once ANCC moves out. The boundaries for Turnagain, Baxter, and Northwood Elementary are recommended for changes to include students from the two closing elementary schools.Volcano Watch: Vehicle care tips in case of Spurr eruptionRobb Kulin: Former astronaut candidate reflects on crews in SpaceX crews time in space
