Patients with the highest levels of a specific protein were 50% more likely to die from a heart complication, a new study has found.

A new and affordable blood test could assist in pinpointing individuals most susceptible to dying from heart failure, according to research.

Testing for this protein, known as neuropeptide Y , could possibly show how heart failure is likely to develop, experts suggest. Researchers are hopeful that a blood test will be able to help mould treatments for heart failure patients within five years. The study, supported by the BHF and published in the European Journal of Heart Failure, was done with Professor Pardeep Jhund from the University of Glasgow.

Additionally, he revealed: "Next, we will investigate whether measuring for very high levels neuropeptide Y could influence whether patients can get lifesaving treatment like ICDs before the blood test can be rolled out within five years." The researchers suggest that testing for NPY as well as BNP could help diagnose heart failure patients and identify those who may be at a higher risk of dying.
