Construction is nearly complete on the new Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City after almost three years.

in Alexander City after almost three years. District officials say they plan to open the campus by the end of January. “The old high school was completed in about 1950, so we’re coming up on 75 years of the old high school , so certainly it was time to move on,” Jose Reyes, superintendent ofThe campus includes several state-of-the-art features.

The arena-style gymnasium seats about 1,200, and a 672-seat performing arts center gives the school expanded space for concerts and theater. The campus also features an open courtyard, a new football and soccer practice field, and, for the first time in the school’s history, a competition track surrounding the field. Safety was a major consideration for the new building, especially since Central Alabama is prone to tornadoes. Under a tornado warning, students would be escorted to the band room, which Reyes says is built as a fortified tornado shelter. “It’s double-blocked,” Reyes said. “Normally, you put a little bit of rebar in your concrete block, but it’s full of rebar, full of concrete, and it’s very, very sturdy, and we can get the entire school into that area.” The total cost of the project was $102 million. Reyes said the investment, while lengthy and expensive, will benefit students and the community for years to come.
