Vogue shares everything to know about the Issey Miyake X New Balance collaboration, launching in Japan exclusively on 15 May and globally on 14 June 2024. The partnership reimagines the minimalist MT10 trainer, which boasts a lightweight silhouette that mimics being barefoot.

Vogue has reported extensively on “wrong” shoes, “non” shoes and everything in between. Now, meet the “barefoot” shoe: a new footwear proposition that comes courtesy of a collaboration between Issey Miyake and New Balance. With a lightweight, breathable mesh and leather upper, and sculpted, close-to-the-ground soles, consider it the sportier, more practical alternative to the wafer-thin mesh ballet pumps that have become popular of late.

Designed by Issey Miyake artistic director and head designer, Satoshi Kondo, the minimalist silhouette is a modern update of New Balance’s archive MT10 – a trainer from its trail running footwear family, which was first introduced in 2011 – inspired by the “concept of sensuous physicality and barefoot mobility” and the “natural and honest shape” theme that informed Kondo’s spring/summer 2024 ready-to-wear collection, debuted in September.
