If you’ve put a screen protector on your iPhone 17 series, you’re not alone, but it seems that many can reduce the effectiveness of the iPhone’s Ceramic Shield 2.
Apple ’s iPhones have had tough display coverings for some years, thanks to the introduction of the company’s bespoke Ceramic Shield finish. But the latest Ceramic Shield 2, introduced on the iPhone 17 series, can be affected by screen protectors, a new report claims.
. It’s worth noting that Astropad is a company that makes screen protectors, so it does have skin in the game. But the study is extensive and full of interesting information and testing standards details.Ceramic Shield, in my experience, is reliable against drops, but less protective against scratches or grazes. However, Ceramic Shield 2 promised better scratch protection as well. Additionally, and this is the key element here, Apple boasted of an anti-reflective coating on Ceramic Shield 2, found on the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. According to Astropad, “With iPhone 17, protection is applied directly to the glass. When a screen protector is installed, the protector adheres to the iPhone display with a thin layer of adhesive. However, because AR coatings are tuned for and rely on direct contact with air, covering the coating with glue essentially cancels its effectiveness. The coating is still present, but it can’t function properly while covered,” it says.It goes on to say that some screen protectors, when placed on top of Ceramic Shield 2, doubled the amount of reflectivity on the display. An anti-reflective coating is desirable, so this result is not. The study promotes Astropad’s Fresh Coat solution as a way or reducing reflectivity, though you could argue that it might be an even better solution to not put any protector on at all, if Apple’s claims of less scratchability prove correct — and they haven’t been widely disproved yet. Other screen protectors are available and some have different properties. Zagg, for instance, has models with blue light filtration or with privacy built in so if someone’s looking over your shoulder, the content of your iPhone display is obscured.
