DreamWorks earns its worst opening weekend ever at the domestic box office, sinking lower than the pandemic-depressed Spirit: Untamed from 2021.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is sinking at the box office this weekend. The animated movie, which opened on June 30 opposite Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny, stars Lana Condor in the title role as a teenage girl who discovers she is the heir to an underwater throne held by a line of kraken warrior queens. The ensemble voice cast also includes Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Jaboukie Young-White, Christine Baranski, and Jane Fonda.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Deadline reports that the opening weekend for Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken has been nothing short of catastrophic. The movie opened at No. 6 at the domestic box office with $5.2 million, earning DreamWorks Animation the worst domestic opening weekend in the company's 28 years of existence. It's doing slightly better worldwide, with an overall gross of $12. 8 million.
Ruby Gillman Proves Not Every 2023 Animated Movie is a Surefire Hit Ruby Gillman arrives at a time when it seems that American animation can't stop winning. The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse box office just crossed $600 million worldwide as the movie holds it spot at No. 2 on the domestic charts a full month after its premiere. That movie follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which quickly rose to become the 17th highest-grossing movie of all time after its release this April.
Ruby Gillman doesn't come with the built-in franchise interest of either of those titles. However, it does boast a cast loaded with performers hot off reasonably buzzy projects. Feldman is fresh off the Jennifer Lawrence-led comedy No Hard Feelings and Fonda starred in both 80 for Brady and Book Club: The Next Chapter earlier this year, while Murphy and Young-White co-starred in the recent Black Mirror season 6 episode "Joan is Awful.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is also the end of a recent hot streak for DreamWorks that includes titles such as The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The latter movie grossed nearly $500 million worldwide. It's hard to say what combination of factors led this new movie to achieve such a low turnout, but the competition from Spider-Verse mixed with a mediocre 65 percent Rotten Tomatoes for Ruby likely had something to do with it.
