ANAHEIM — When the Angels acquired right-hander Dominic Leone just before the trade deadline last week, General Manager Perry Minasian said that he should be judged more by what he had done lately than the 4.40 ERA he accumulated with the New York Mets.
Leone threw 13 fastballs that averaged 97.0 mph on Tuesday. It was the hardest he’d thrown in a game with at least five fastballs since 2014.“There’s no secret sauce or magic potion that’s made it go up,” Leone said. “I’ve just been feeling good mechanically. I like the way I’m moving down the mound. It’s translated to a small little bump. To be honest, I haven’t even really noticed.”
In three games so far with the Angels, he’s allowed one run and three hits in five innings. The velocity peaked on Tuesday.“It’s just really about getting in a rhythm,” Leone said. “That’s been hard for me this year, just from moving around so much and being in a bunch of different organizations. But just understanding my base for my pitching mechanics and what I like to do out in the field, it’s allowed me to now kind of get a rhythm. I like what I’m doing on the field. My pregame stuff.
Since then, the Angels traded for first baseman C.J. Cron, a move that allows Mike Moustakas to be the everyday third baseman. Right-hander Griffin Canning “feels like he could get back on the mound right now,” Nevin said. The Angels have not decided if he will make a rehab appearance. …
