So.”“I just love getting to see everybody’s costumes, and everybody comes from so many different groups, and they get to express themselves,” she said. “And they get so creative. And it’s just so much fun. All the special tinkerers of Joe Cain, too. are my favorite part.” Wayne Dean has been portraying Joe Cain’s alter ego, Chief Slacabamorinico, for 39 years now. It conjures the legend of the famous Mobilian who is said to have dressed as an Indian chief to lift the spirits of a defeated city after the Civil War. “It means getting and really riding through a cross-section of Mobile,” he said. “And watching the happy faces. I like to say that we’re making memories that children that see us in 50 years, 60 years – or see somebody else –that they’ll remember what they did as a child and pass it on.”“This is our first year walking with Joe Cain,” said a man who identified himself only as J45. “We’re looking forward to it. I’m excited.” Kaliyah Finklea, a 10-year-old girl who was with the group, showed off a costume featuring elaborate wings.“I wish,” she said. There were lots of folks just watching, like Colin Emmons. He’s only 7, but he’s already a Mardi Gras veteran.His father, Stephen Emmons, is a former police officer who spent many a Mardi Gras parade on the other side of the barricades. He said it’s better on this side. “A lot better,” he said. “I don’t have to deal with all the nonsense and the knuckleheads and everything else that goes on. Over here, I get to enjoy it and partake.
