A newly formed advocacy group for LGBTQ + joined House Democrats on Monday in calling for stronger protections against discrimination over sexual orientation and gender expression or identity.Leaders with Fairness Pennsylvania took to the Capitol Rotunda to highlight the issue and the organization's formation and mission of advocating for the LGBTQ + community in the commonwealth.
However, LGBTQ Equality Caucus Chair Jessica Benham, D-Allegheny County, said those protections should be solidified through law to ensure LGBTQ+ people are protected, regardless of changes that may occur to leadership or governance in Pennsylvania and the United States.'There's a difference between the kind of guidance that a governor might issue and having your rights enshrined in law,' she said.
