Planting flags at five cemeteries, San Antonio's Jewish War Veterans Post 753 salutes veterans and shares a message: 'The goal is to not forget.'

The volunteers were up early Sunday because they had a mission to carry out at Temple Beth El Memorial Park on Austin Highway — to plant more than 400 flags at the headstones of Jewish war veterans at this and four other San Antonio cemeteries. 'These service members served our country so we can do what we do,' said retired Army Command Sgt. Major Donna Balderston , commander of Jewish War Veterans Post 753 , which sponsored the event and provided the flags. 'And we honor them.

It's been a labor of love for Sheiness, who had had fewer people helping him — until this Memorial Day weekend. There's been a greater outpouring of support this year, with more inquiries. 'I’ve had quite a few,' said Sheiness, 79, of San Antonio. He and others who were at the cemeteries Sunday think it's important to remind Americans that Jews serve in the military. Hundreds of thousands have fought, especially in World War II and the Korean War, and many died in combat.
