Friends of Real Lancashire, the Local Government Act and what it all means

For almost 50 years, the boundaries of Lancashire have been rigidly set against our friends in Yorkshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. But before then, times were very different where a Lancashire identity was pretty much everywhere you turned across these five North West counties.

They are also not shy of telling us what they think if we refer to one of those places as being 'near Lancashire'. Campaigning has remained resolute ever since with backing even coming from royalty. Here at LancsLive we take a look at the debate over what is, and what isn't, in Lancashire. And because the creation of Cumbria was relatively recent many people living in the county hold birth certificates which state they were born in Lancashire.

In 2002, the Friends of Real Lancashire group teamed up Frederic Robinson Ltd brewery, based in Manchester, to print more than 4,000 beer mats. The circular mats outlined the group's campaign to get the area recognised as Lancashire again and they were distributed in all Robinson's pubs within the traditional County of Lancashire between Furness and Manchester.
