Dr. John Kelly, a neurologist operating in Wasilla, plans to expand his clinic to the interior of Alaska to address the shortage of neurological care in Fairbanks and reduce travel for patients. The new clinic in Fairbanks will focus on treating multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disorder.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Dr. John Kelly, a neurologist currently operating a clinic in Wasilla, plans to expand his services to the interior.
Many patients seeking neurological care in Fairbanks have to travel south to the Mat-Su Borough or Anchorage. This is in part due to a shortage of neurologists in the interior. “My first patient of the day was somebody who drove down from Fairbanks last night to to be here for their appointment this morning,” said Kelly.
While there are neurological offices in Fairbanks currently, Kelly wants to increase access to neurological care in the interior to reduce the amount of travel for those patients., a chronic neurological disorder that is also an autoimmune disorder. The clinic he plans to open in Fairbanks will also focus on that illness.
Another reason for expanding his operations to Fairbanks is because he bought a home there, “for retirement purposes in 2017,” said Kelly. While he only retired for one year before returning to the practice he fell in love with the community and “just decided that’s where my heart is,” he said. Once he opens his clinic in Fairbanks, he plans to continue his practice in Wasilla as well, dividing his time between the two locations.
