Alessia Russo’s second-half equaliser could not earn England Women a point as Sarina Wiegman’s side lost 2-1 on her Nations League return to the Netherlands.Russo was one of those coming into the team after being rested for Friday’s 2-1 win over Scotland at the Stadium of Light. Ella Toone was also recalled to the starting XI as Chloe Kelly and Lauren James dropped to the bench.The Netherlands took the lead in the 34th minute when Georgia Stanway lost possession, the ball came to Danielle van de Donk in the box and she laid it to Lieke Martens, who lofted it past Mary Earps and into the net.
England equalised in the 64th minute through Russo, who turned the ball in as she connected with Stanway’s deflected pass. Netherlands substitute Renate Jansen put her side back in front in the 90th minute, cracking a powerful effort past Earps.
