Netflix faces intense backlash after technical and production issues disrupted its NFL Christmas Day games.
Netflix carried two afternoon Christmas Day games on Thursday — Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings , while the evening matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
During both Netflix broadcasts, social media feeds reflected a wave of user complaints throughout the afternoon. Common, repeated problems included intermittent buffering and large swings in picture quality, failures or limits when casting to Chromecast/TV devices, difficulties toggling or closing captions, occasional muffled audio, and viewers reporting trouble finding or starting the live stream in some app/TV environments. Downdetector reportedly logged roughly 500 complaints tied to Netflix during the noon/early-afternoon window for the Cowboys–Commanders game. Notice about ads can’t be removed & stream keeps pausing mid action & goes to Netflix splash screen,“ one user wrote. “Netflix shouldn’t stream games if the picture is going to be this terrible… feel like I’m watching Nintendo 64 smh,“ said another fan. “Not gonna lie, glad the UFC didn’t go to Netflix with the quality of this stream. Feels like every NFL Netflix game is like watching a video off eBaum’s world in the 90s,“ one other commenter replied. “#NFL on #Netflix horrible presentation. Stream quality poorest I've seen in some time,“ another user remarked. Beyond streaming performance, many viewers criticized editorial/production choices, such as unscheduled or distracting mid-game interviews and segments , promotional cross-marketing that felt intrusive, and an overall “chaotic” presentation compared with traditional broadcasters. “Nobody wants to hear an interview in the middle of an NFL game. Netflix, what are we doing? Emmitt Smith is cool, but this is ridiculous,“ one user wrote. “Fire the production team for Netflix. An abomination of a broadcast. No one needs to see guys who played 6-10-30 years ago on FaceTime during a close divisional game,“ another fan commented. In its first full Christmas slate , Netflix recorded breakthrough streaming results: Nielsen and the NFL reported an unduplicated U.S. audience of roughly 65 million across the doubleheader and per-game Average Minute Audience figures between 24 and 27 million, figures that set streaming records for regular-season NFL games. Ultimately, live sports are the crown jewel of appointment viewing for streamers, attracting large, time-sensitive audiences, yet Netflix’s Christmas NFL experiment has illustrated both the commercial upside and the operational demands that come with delivering marquee live events.
