A new animated Ghostbusters movie is in development at Netflix. This news comes after the live-action Ghostbusters : Frozen Empire released earlier in 2024, featuring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson reprising their roles. A live-action Ghostbusters series is also in development at Netflix, separate from this animated project. Elliot Kalan is the showrunner for the animated series, while Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are executive producers.
Deadline has confirmed that Sony Animation and Netflix are collaborating on the animated movie, with Kris Pearn attached to direct. Pearn previously directed Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Willoughbys for Netflix. Details about the plot are still under wraps, but this development marks a shift for the franchise towards animation and streaming. While the franchise previously had the animated The Real Ghostbusters series in the 1980s, Ghostbusters has primarily been focused on theatrical releases. Despite the box office success of Frozen Empire, its final earnings were below expectations. Diversifying the franchise through streaming platforms with both an animated series and movie seems to be the new strategy
