An utterly brilliant mind who has changed the face of modern horror time after time, Flanagan has delivered incomparable limited series. But wouldn’t you know that the one time he anticipated a longer-running series, it was canceled after the first season. One of the most disappointing cancellations in Netflix history came with the brilliant The Midnight Club.
Based on the Christopher Pike novel series, The Midnight Club was set at Brightcliffe Home, a hospice outside of Seattle, where eight terminally ill young adults would meet up each night to tell scary stories. As each story is shared, it is depicted on-screen. Beyond the stories, the group formed a pact that the first one to succumb to their disease is responsible for communicating with the others from beyond the grave.
A one-season wonder, The Midnight Club was a tremendously underrated series that pushed storytelling to new heights. Though the series may not have gotten the attention Flanagan's other hits did, The Midnight Club and its brilliant characters gave hope to the hopeless. A story about love and friendship, they each found a purpose, with a new tale to look forward to each night.
After the cancellation, Flanagan gave a gift to the true fans by giving them an outline of where the series would have gone next. Though it left us too soon, it leads the charge as an underrated gem that deserves more love. 2 'Behind Her Eyes' Netflix has played host to an array of brilliant psychological thrillers. Whether original concepts or adaptations, audiences flock to the streamer for quality thrills.
In 2017, Steve Lightfoot created a phenomenal show based on Sarah Pinborough’s novel, Behind Her Eyes. The story follows Louise Barnsley , a single mother who starts an affair with her new boss, Dr. David Ferguson , while also forming an unlikely friendship with his mysterious wife, Adele . Blurring the lines of reality and illusion, Louise gets drawn into the couple's dangerous web, revealing a hidden, paranormal agenda behind their seemingly normal lives.
A truly bonkers thriller, Behind Her Eyes has fallen to the wayside. An erotic thriller that relies on its crazy twists, Behind Her Eyes was a guiltless watch. Across six episodes, the series was endlessly engrossing, thanks in part to the trio of performers entangled in the intoxicating web, though it was a divisive series due to the audience's split reaction to the mind-blowing finale.
Body-swapping thrillers aren’t always going to work, but Behind Her Eyes made it something exceptionally unique. If you’ve enjoyed Robert Aramayo in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, his performance here is a necessary watch. We bow down to you. 3 'Bodies' Some shows require your complete, undivided attention, and Bodies was very much one of them. In fact, a whiteboard may have come in handy for its intricate story.
That said, Bodies was simply astonishing storytelling. Based on the DC Vertigo graphic novel, the sci-fi mystery thriller follows four detectives in four eras — DS Sharhara Hasan , DS Karl Weissman , DI Alfred Hillinghead , and DC Iris Maplewood — who discover the same dead body in the same London location, uncovering a massive, century-spanning conspiracy involving a cult leader and a time-looping doomsday device.
As each detective slowly unravels the truth about how their cases connect through the mysterious time-traveling figure Elias Mannix/Julian Harker , Bodies is a time-warped team-up adventure that all leads to the prevention of a catastrophic event. Bodies was a highly intellectual work of art. For casual television viewers, Bodies’ high concept may have been far too complex and complicated to appreciate.
Yet, if you stick to the story and allow the action to unravel, the payoff is well worth it. Its intricacies are perfectly plotted, so keeping a close watch on the action makes it a satisfying binge. A truly transcendent tale, Bodies is a twisty time travel story that deserves multiple viewings to nail down the puzzle properly. But fret not, as it’s a worthy rewatch.

Loosely based on the Norwegian series, the Patrick Somerville-created show followed two struggling strangers, Anna and Owen, who connect during a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial involving Dr. James K. Mantleray , a doctor with mother issues and an emotionally complex computer, set in a retro-future New York City.
Through surreal, genre-bending dreamscapes, Annie and Owen confront trauma, loneliness, and their inner demons, ultimately exploring themes of connection, reality, and what it means to be"normal" in a technologically advanced, emotionally disconnected world. Through black comedy, the sci-fi premise forces a discussion about how true healing comes not from a pill, but from understanding and connecting with others and ourselves. Maniac featured a top-notch cast.
Beyond Stone, Hill, and Thereoux, it included Sally Field, Gabriel Byrne, Billy Magnussen, and Julia Garner, among others. With delightfully dazzling visuals, the adventure came and went with little fanfare, despite the strong reviews. Perhaps since higher-concept series are all the rage now, Maniac simply arrived a tad too early. 5 'Absentia' Let’s begin with a brief caveat: Absentia was originally a Prime Video series. That said, with it being available to stream on Netflix, we’ll discuss it here.
The three-season series was a psychological thriller that follows FBI Agent Emily Byrne , who disappears while hunting a serial killer, is declared dead in absentia, and then reappears six years later with amnesia. She returns to find her husband remarried, and her son raised by another woman, but becomes entangled in a new murder case, becoming the prime suspect as she tries to piece together her past and reclaim her life.
A shocking exploration of identity, trauma, memory, and trust, Absentia is an enthralling adventure that pushes past the psychological turmoil for a criminal web of mystery that keeps you longing for answers just as much as Emily. With the sensationally captivating Katic in a thrilling lead role, Absentia is a truly addictive series, especially if you adore textbook procedurals.
Three seasons may not have felt sufficient for audiences, but for Katic, she felt strongly that it was a perfect amount of space for a beautiful, complicated, and wonderfully fulfilling journey for Emily. It’s received somewhat of a resurgence of attention at its new home, but it still deserves much more buzz. 6 'The Stranger' Let’s get it out of the way now: the reason we seem to have let The Stranger get away from us is simply due to the amount of nonstop Harlan Coben content we’ve had since.
Based on his 2015 novel, the 2020 mystery thriller followed an intricate story as the titular woman mysteriously appears to people while wearing a baseball cap, telling them shocking secrets about their loved ones. One such victim is Adam Price . When his wife goes missing as a result of the disclosure, the stranger is revealed to be connected with more secrets, monetary demands, further blackmail, and a classic Coben twist you never saw coming.
A major factor in The Stranger’s success is the extraordinary ensemble, which also included Jennifer Saunders, Shaun Dooley, Siobhan Finneran, and Paul Kaye. With everyone somehow involved in the mystery, the stakes are high, allowing for a worthy binge as the saga unfolds. A tension-filled, addictive watch, The Stranger is Coben at his finest. With at least one new Coben thriller a year following The Stranger’s debut, non-Coben fans may have Coben binge fatigue.
Even so, The Stranger is one that deserves your attention. 7 'Bodyguard' If you’re like me, Bodyguard sat on the Netflix recommendation list and later on the Watch List. Bodyguard was that show that you eventually got to and then wished you had watched sooner.
Originally airing on the BBC, the gripping political thriller stars Richard Madden as David Budd, a war veteran with PTSD who works as a police protection officer and is assigned to protect the ambitious and controversial UK Home Secretary, Julia Montague , whose hawkish politics he despises. With intense conflict, Budd grapples with duty, trauma, and a dangerous web of terrorism and government secrets, where he discovers that he might be her biggest threat.
The high-octane thriller was fast-paced and well-acted, yet with such a positive response from critics, its jump to Netflix didn’t pop the way it did in the UK. If you enjoy political pieces that keep the action moving, Bodyguard is right for you. 8 'The OA' The OA was a fledgling series in the grander scheme of Netflix. In fact, it was easily the most daring and risky series that was well ahead of its time.
Created and executive produced by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, with Marling in the lead, The OA follows a young woman named Prairie Johnson, who has resurfaced after having been missing for seven years. Prairie now calls herself"the OA" and can see, despite having been blind before her disappearance.
She recruits five locals to teach them a series of movements she claims can open portals to other dimensions, revealing her traumatic past, near-death experiences with otherworldly beings, and a mission to rescue others. A truly mesmerizing science fiction fantasy thriller, The OA’s initial fan base helped earn it a second season, falling away soon thereafter before a third season could commence.
The OA came out during a time when there were certainly viewers seeking something daring, but The OA was so specifically unique that it also managed to push some viewers aside. A highly intellectual and heady piece that it was very much a personal project for Marling, whose performance didn't connect with everyone.
Furthermore, a school shooting is not an easy watch. A truly remarkable moment in television history, The OA is uniquely its own work of art. Maybe there could be a universe in which a third season is ordered, but with so much phenomenal television today, it might require a special choreographed dance to come to fruition.
