Netflix's One Piece hints at THAT tragic moment.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Despite having just one season under its belt, Netflix's One Piece adaptation foreshadows a tragic moment that probably won't come to pass in live-action form until season 4. The best-selling manga series of all time and a hit anime, One Piece boasts legions of dedicated fans, which certainly raises the stakes for Netflix's take on the story and its characters.

Like its other iterations, the live-action series chronicles the misadventures of One Piece's Monkey D. Luffy and his rag-tag crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as they search the world for the titular fabled treasure. Eager to become the "King of the Pirates," the ever-enthusiastic Luffy eventually captains the Going Merry, a newly built ship the Straw Hats receive in episode 4 of the series.

The Going Merry "Talking" References A Future One Piece Tragedy More than a means of transit for the Straw Hats, the Going Merry is a quintessential One Piece character and an incredibly important member of the crew. In the anime version of One Piece, the Going Merry is a sentient ship — one that performs minor miracles to keep the Straw Hat Pirates safe on their voyage.

In one of One Piece's saddest scenes, the Going Merry sustains damage and begins to buckle under its own weight. Broken beyond repair, the ship's fate is sealed. This forces the Straw Hats to make a heart-wrenching choice: let the Going Merry sink to the ocean's depths or join it in a watery grave. As the ship accepts its fate, the Going Merry bids farewell to the crew.

Will Going Merry Talk In One Piece Season 2? Introduced in episode 4 of One Piece season 1, the Going Merry hasn't had a ton of screen time yet; the fourth episode marks the halfway point of the 8-episode first season. Although Netflix's One Piece has made some changes to the source material to better account for its medium and story, it's also remained more faithful than most anime adaptations.
