Tom Waaler looking angry in Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole
It is not the first time Harry Hole has made the jump from page to screen, but the last attempt did not exactly leave fans wanting more. Back in 2017, The Snowman tried to turn Jo Nesbø’s troubled detective into a prestige thriller, with Michael Fassbender leading a cast that also included Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, and J.
K. Simmons. On paper, it had the ingredients. In practice, it became one of the more infamous literary adaptations of the last decade. Now, Harry Hole is back, and this time the response is looking a lot stronger. Netflix’s Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole premiered on March 26 and currently holds a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. That score is still early and based on a small number of reviews, so it could shift, but it is already a dramatic improvement over The Snowman, which sits at 7% on the same site. That gap says a lot, even this early. Where the Fassbender film became shorthand for a big-screen adaptation that never quite came together, Detective Hole already looks like a better fit for Nesbø’s world. The longer format helps. Instead of trying to compress Harry’s mess of demons, enemies, and murder investigations into one film, the Netflix series has room to let the character breathe and spiral at the same time. The new series runs for nine episodes, not eight, and stars Tobias Santelmann as Harry Hole, with Joel Kinnaman playing his longtime rival, the corrupt detective Tom Waaler. Collider’s review by Kelcie Mattson stated that Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole is the kind of crime thriller that understands exactly what fans of Nordic noir are showing up for, but it also has enough personality to avoid feeling like a retread. Set against a vividly realized Oslo, the series leans into moody atmosphere, psychological damage, and grisly mystery while still keeping its storytelling sharp and propulsive. Even across its longer episode count, it rarely feels like it’s dragging. Equal parts psychological character study and plot-driven brain-twister, the show largely maintains its momentum throughout; bursts of graphic violence and meditative investigations interrupt the pervasive coiling tendrils of dread, before speeding into propulsive overdrive once hero and villain find the walls closing in around them. A roundhouse-kick of a thrill ride that lives up to the promises baked into the thriller subgenre's name, Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole delivers virtually everywhere it should — which is nothing less than what a modern legend deserves. 8 10 Joe Nesbø's Detective Hole Like Follow Followed M18 Mystery Crime Drama Thriller Release Date March 26, 2026 Network Netflix Directors Øystein Karlsen Writers Jo Nesbø Cast
