As their influence continues to be felt far and wide, one worthy successor has emerged to international fanfare: The Wonderfools.
The South Korean comedy follows a trio of downtrodden locals who, after being exposed to chemical waste, gain superhuman abilities. Town pariah Eun Chae-ni can teleport when her heart races, sentimental outcast Kang Ro-bin unlocks super strength when he feels insulted, and busybody Son Gyeong-hun turns into human flypaper whenever he tells a lie. To hone their newfound powers, the group employs Lee Un-jeong , a telekinetic civil servant with a dark past.
Less than a week after its release, The Wonderfools has garnered a warm reception from viewers and critics, but the similarities it shares with major sci-fi titles are undeniable. Un-jeong's powers presented after being ruthlessly experimented on in the so-called"Wunderkinder" Project, a plot that feels like a blast from Stranger Things' past.
Furthermore, just like The Umbrella Academy, The Wonderfools highlights quirky powers while focusing on found family. In many ways, the 2026 drama feels like an amalgam of its best superhero show predecessors, but it nonetheless retains its own sense of originality.

From the relationships between the unlikely team to the grander importance of Wunderkinder, The Wonderfools wrapped up its most important storylines with a bow in the climactic two-part finale. Yet, there's no denying the end feels somehow like a beginning in its own right. In fact, a mid-credits scene introduced an entirely new mystery that a second season could unravel.
