I’ve been queer my whole life. Like many queer people, I never had a specific moment of recognising that I was queer. Rather, I had a moment of realising nobody else was, and so, just like everyone else, my young life waswith crushes. I don’t know if I matched or exceeded the amount of crushes my friends were having, because I didn’t talk about them , but it feels like I had a.
Love is, indeed, love, and I feel happy that we’ve become much more accustomed to the idea of queer love as separate from queer lust. There’s still work to do though, obviously; vast swathes of the governing class still equate queer love with pornography, while hypocritically pushing straight love stories out to all ages.
Over the past few years, I’ve been reacquainting myself with coming out stories, and the concept of first love. When the world is so awful and prejudiced towards queer people , it’s been incredibly nourishing to get back to the root of things, before the molestation of society took hold. Shows like, are a palate cleanser. I wholeheartedly celebrate the sexual being I am now, but it’s powerful to see the possibilities I missed out on for something more gradual, more tender.
This was the dream for me growing up. As difficult as it is to believe now, my attractions weren’t always so lusty. Sometimes, I wanted to slow dance to Robbie Williams’s “Angels” with a boy like my friends were doing. I was desperate to hold hands, to find myself sneaking off to a quieter part of the party with a boy, just to talk, to have the long, complicated evolution of a particular friendship into something more. This is the bit I think our detractors misunderstand.
