The best new movie to hit Netflix in a while has arrived after a big box office run, but it may not be for everyone, given its subject matter.
Netflix has replaced Subservience in its Top 10 movie list with something arguably much better than the Megan Fox android thriller. That would be the mega-popularThe movie has instantly rocketed to #1 on the list and it is in fact Netflix’s best new movie, though you have to listen to audiences, not critics this time. While It Ends With Us has just a 55% score from critics, it has an extremely high 90% score from audiences.
The film may have initially sounded like a romantic comedy, but it’s actually a rather dark exploration of an increasingly abusive relationship between Lively and Baldoni in the film. Here’s the synopsis: “It Ends With Us, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the story of Lily Bloom, a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship.
What drove a lot of interest and buzz around the movie was a reported real-life feud between Blake Lively and star/director Justin Baldoni, which featured things like dramatic press tours, people not following people on Instagram and some passive aggressive press comments. Needless to say it seems unlikely the two will be reteaming again, no matter how big a success this was. $350 million on a reported $25 million budget is an enormous hit in the current state of superhero-filled Hollywood.
Colleen Hoover is a massively popular author, so no doubt after this other books will be adapted. I’m not sure why it took this long to dive into her collection but there are easily a dozen options to adapt from here. The next one coming is Anne Hathaway starring in Verity, about a woman who can’t finish a novel after being in a car accident. Another is an adaption of Reminders of Him, reportedly coming in early 2026.
