Matt Damon on the red carpet

Matt Damon starred in more than a few sci-fi movies in the 2010s, and it's a testament to his versatility that none is like the others despite belonging to the same genre. The most successful of the bunch is The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott.

In fact, it's still the highest-grossing movie of Damon's career as a leading man, although this might change with The Odyssey releasing this summer. The second, Downsizing, is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Directed by Alexander Payne, the high-concept film divided critics and audiences, and ended up bombing at the box office. He also starred in the well-received hit The Adjustment Bureau alongside Emily Blunt. There is, however, a fourth sci-fi movie that Damon starred in during this time. That movie is available on Netflix, but not for every subscriber. It's one of the 140 titles that the streamer has restricted this month for subscribers to its ad-supported tier. This happens mainly for rights reasons, as Netflix can't monetize certain titles with ads. Although it has struck a first-run deal with Sony, none of those movies are eligible for its ad-supported tier. Damon's sci-fi movie is a Sony title. It was released theatrically in 2013, and featured a stunning cast including Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura, Diego Luna, and others. Although the movie received mostly positive reviews and had solid box-office numbers, it hasn't exactly become a cult favorite. The director's self-critical comments might have something to do with it, because the film's themes remain as immediate as ever. How many of these movies do you know? Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Here's the Matt Damon Sci-Fi Movie That Left Audiences Underwhelmed We're talking, of course, about Elysium. The movie grossed nearly $290 million worldwide against a reported budget of $115 million. For context, The Martian grossed over $600 million globally and cost virtually the same. Elysium was directed by Neill Blomkamp, who had broken out with the Best Picture-nominated District 9 some years prior. In an interview with Uproxx a couple of years after the film's release, Blomkamp admitted that he messed up in less polite words: "I just didn't make a good enough film, which is ultimately what it is. I feel like I executed all the stuff that could be executed, like costume and set design and special effects, very well. But, ultimately, it was all resting on a somewhat not totally formed skeletal system, so the script just wasn't there; the story wasn't fully there." You can watch Elysium on Netflix, but only if you're not subscribed to the streamer's ad-supported tier. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
