After the mixed results of The Witcher, Netflix aims to create a sprawling fantasy universe based on Magic: The Gathering's vast lore and characters. The streaming giant hopes to recapture the magic of Game of Thrones with this ambitious project.
Years after Netflix's previous attempt at building a shared fantasy universe, Magic: The Gathering is their next opportunity. Magic: The Gathering is one of the biggest titles in tabletop gaming, with over 27,000 unique playable cards to utilize, making it one of the most extensive strategy games available. With decades of development, it also has some fascinating lore and compelling, vibrant characters, making it an excellent option for a streaming service to adapt.
In February 2025, reports came out that Netflix is planning to build a shared universe set in the world of MTG after an initial movie. The 2020s have seen a boom in fantasy shows, with every streaming service wanting the next Game of Thrones. However, after HBO’s cultural phenomenon, there’s yet to be anything that’s come close to its broad cultural appeal. Prime Video has The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power, both of which have received mixed reception. HBO’s own House of the Dragon got off to a hot start, but the excitement fizzled after a divisive second season. Netflix’s The Witcher currently awaits season 4, but it’s experienced its own issues. Hopefully, MTG will be exactly what fantasy lovers deserve.Netflix Tried To Turn The Witcher Into A Shared Universe, But It Hasn't Worked Out The Witcher Media Has Received Mixed Reactions From Fans The Witcher show is based on a beloved series of fantasy books and an even more popular video game franchise, with The Witcher 3 being considered one of the greatest games ever made. With those standards in mind, Netflix's adaptation hasn't lived up to expectations. With it being the first major fantasy series to follow up Game of Thrones, the show even had a significant amount of hype leading up to its first season, especially given that movie star Henry Cavill was cast to play the main character, Geralt of Rivia. The Witcher: Blood Origin was a disaster with fans and critics The main series has been successful with viewership, but each season has declined in quality. Now that Liam Hemsworth is taking over Henry Cavill's spot, it'll have another hurdle to overcome. Netflix has expanded The Witcher with spinoff shows and animated films, but the shared universe hasn't panned out. The Witcher: Blood Origin was a disaster with fans and critics, and while the animated movie saw more acclaim, it didn't have the broad appeal Netflix needs to draw in viewership. That being said, they're still moving forward in looking for potential replacements to be their marquee fantasy title. Netflix has been working on a Greta Gerwig-led movie series based on The Chronicles of Narnia for over a year now, and Magic: The Gathering is just the latest in a growing list of fantasy titles they've attempted. However, it's the first time since The Witcher that they intend to develop a fully formed fantasy universe. The Chronicles of Narnia is a straightforward story, and titles like Shadow and Bone didn't have the appeal to be expanded into other titles. Netflix is taking a gamble on Magic: The Gathering by potentially mapping out multiple projects before the first one hits their site, but it could ultimately be what they were looking for all along. The Witcher has great material to adapt, but there's not as much source material to pull from in order to have multiple stories in different eras. Why Magic: The Gathering Is Better Suited To A Shared Universe Than The Witcher MTG Has A Wider Pool Of Stories To Draw From Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher books are excellent, but they focus primarily on a centralized group of characters. It's very different from Game of Thrones or the Marvel films, where there are dozens of compelling characters and narratives to explore. Magic: The Gathering's lore and characters aren't as well known to audiences just yet, but there's plenty to dive into across multiple distinct universe'planes,' as the story's main characters, called planeswalkers, exist outside those different planes.
