Israel’s Parliament on Sunday narrowly voted in favor of a new coalition government led by right-wing politician Naftali Bennett that brings to an end the 12-year rule of Benjamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving leader.Israel’s Parliament, the Knesset, voted in favor of the new government—an unlikely coalition of eight disparate political parties—60 to 59 with one abstention.
Bennett, a former aide of Netanyahu’s who is the leader of the right-wing Yamina party, will now be sworn in as prime minister. The role will then be handed to Yair Lapid, the leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party, after two years, according to the power-sharing agreement. The new government is made up of parties spanning the political spectrum, including the United Arab List, which is the first Arab party to join an Israeli governing coalition.
