ANALYSIS: Net zero is the goal, but will chaos in the regions delay energy transition goals?
However, many communities are only beginning to recognise what is coming to their area and to grapple with the local implications.
They want a long-term strategy for financial benefits to flow to the whole community rather than just to a small group of landholders. Communities hosting large carbon offsets want to know that these projects can co-exist with and benefit agriculture and the environment. But they are also cynical about the likely local outcomes and conscious that the difficult local trade-offs and downsides aren’t really understood by governments or industry.The onus is on the Commonwealth and State and governments who are driving this change to create a practical process for regional involvement, deal with local downsides and define stronger pathways for local benefits.
