Nestor Cortes’ homecoming — and potentially his season — has been called off.
Cortes landed back on the injured list Friday with a left rotator cuff strain, the same injury that recently sidelined him for two months.
The Yankees left-hander had returned from the 60-day IL last Saturday to throw four strong innings against the Astros and was scheduled to to pitch again on Saturday against his hometown Marlins, about 30 minutes from where he grew up.Jason Szenes for the NY PostBut apparently the soreness Cortes experienced during the week was more serious than what the Yankees hoped was “normal” soreness.
It was the reason why they had pushed him back a day to Saturday, which would have been pitching on two extra days rest. The injury is just the latest blow to the Yankees’ rotation, which is hanging by a thread beyond Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt. Carlos Rodon is back on the IL with a hamstring strain, Domingo German is on the restricted list to receive treatment for alcohol abuse, and Luis Severino is healthy but has been almost unusable with an 8.06 ERA.With Randy Vasquez called up to take Rodon’s rotation spot — likely to enter behind opener Ian Hamilton on Friday — Jhony Brito also joined the Yankees on Friday at loanDepot Park, likely to take Cortes’ rotation spot.
