I’ve been writing about technology for two decades and am routinely struck by how the sector swings from startling innovation to persistent repetitiveness. My areas of specialty are wearable tech, cameras, home entertainment and mobile technology.
In our increasingly cashless society, spare a thought for children too young to have a bank account. How can they keep track of their pocket money or how much they were sent for their birthday by that distant relative? Nestlum s are here to help. After all, those gifts are rarely in the form of cash any more, and even if they are, those bank notes will be held by a young child’s parent. So, the money is invisible and understanding how much is in the virtual piggy bank can be hard to remember.
The Nestlum, which comes in green, blue or pink color options, has cute ears and an LCD screen provides a simple but charming face. It smiles when you wake it up, shuts its eyes when it needs to rest and is reminiscent of a larger-sized Tamagotchi. But it has a useful purpose: to encourage healthy money habits in the user, almost without them noticing, by getting to understand the value of earning, saving and spending.
Press a button and the Nestlum will display the balance of how much money the child has. When they spend some money, or when they’re richer because they’ve been given cash, the balance can be adjusted. Only the parent can change the balance, thanks to a secret access mode, so both parent and child can be sure that the figure is accurate.
In other words, it’s been created as a deliberately simple toy, designed to suit its target users, that is, children aged around four to seven. It’s purely a way of keeping tabs on money levels while quietly helping kids to appreciate the value of money.Once money has been spent or saved, there’s another detail, which children will enjoy, even if adults don’t: the Nestlum poops. Don’t worry, this is in the form of a poo emoji appearing on screen.
