Director of the new Netflix series Neon discusses working with famous reggaeton artists, filming in Puerto Rico, and the cast's incredible chemistry.
Summary Neon follows Santi, an aspiring reggaeton artist, and his two best friends, Vanessa and Felix. The trio decided to move to Miami in the hopes of helping Santi's music career take off. While on their quest, they will face challenges as they learn more about the world of reggaeton, and Santi will have to persevere against impossible odds if he has any chance at being the star he's always dreamed of becoming.
Absolutely, man. I love seeing all the diversity on this show, man. It's so refreshing actually and I binged through this show. I powered through it. Simply because it was just that good. I wanted to keep watching every episode. Now Neon features several real-life reggaeton stars like Daddy Yankee, Jota Rosa, and Jhayco. Just to name a few.
Oz Rodriguez: Yeah, it's about reggaeton. So obviously, there's going to be a lot of music playing, and I think there's something about Caribbean folk because in the DR, NPR, and the Caribbean Diaspora in Miami is always playing that music loud. So we knew that music had to be around. But this is a show about a musician, a kid who wants to make it. And we had to get those songs right. So, we enlisted Tainy, who is a world-class superstar who makes beats for Bad Bunny.
Oz Rodriguez: Yeah, yeah, I think like I was saying being there, secluded in paradise, really helped for everybody to bond together, but all of them took their character super seriously. Tyler's Nuyorican from Harlem, Emma is Dominican. So they brought some of their personality to the character, and that's where some of the Spanglish comes out. They're just bringing out the stuff that they would say around their family. And then Jordan is just amazing.
Now this show has Miami vibes all over it, but it was shot in Puerto Rico. What can you tell me? How did Puerto Rico capture the Miami vibes? Because it's almost its own character in itself, you know what I mean?
