The mayor claims a member of the public breached security and pulled a gun on him, demanding a free house.
The Democratic Alliance in Nelson Mandela Bay will hold a press conference on Monday in a bid to “expose the truth” behind an alleged security brief that the municipality’s mayor, the United Democratic Movement’s Mongameli Bobani, alleged took place at Port Elizabeth City Hall.
The press conference will take place at the DA Provincial Head Office in Port Elizabeth at 10am, and will see the DA’s Eastern Cape premier candidate, Ngaba Bhanga, alongside former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip and some of the party’s councillors from the municipality, “provide feedback” on the party’s findings regarding what they believe is the “truth behind mayor Bobani’s alleged gun incident”.
The ANC, UDM, EFF, AIC, United Front, and UDM formed a coalition in August 2018 and managed to remove Trollip as mayor through a vote of no confidence, replacing him with the UDM’s Bobani. The former governing coalition of the DA, Congress of the People , and African Christian Democratic Party took the matter to court, arguing that the motion of no confidence that removed Trollip was “illegal”, but this the case was dismissed with costs.
